The computing power of ALBA at the service of  SARS-CoV-2

The IT Systems Section of the Computing & Controls Division of ALBA has started up a virtual server to process data for the folding@home international project, which is joining researchers around the world working to better understand the 2019 Coronavirus.

HIGHLIGHTS

Towards green energies: new materials for biobutanol separation
BL11-NCD-SWEET / BL-13 XALOC

Researchers have discovered a MOF that allows for the separation of butanol from acetone-butanol-ethanol mixtures that are extracted from the fermentation process of biomass feedstock, as part of the standard industrial process to produce biofuels.

Nanoneedles to increase the capacity and robustness of digital memories
BL24-CIRCE

Researchers have developed a new technique to locally modify the properties of a metamagnetic material. The method consists in applying local pressure to the surface of the material using nanometric needles and allows a much easier and local modification than current methods. The research allows to improve the architecture and capacity of magnetic digital memories.
Taxanes antitumoral drugs modulate cell microtubules
BL11-NCD-SWEET

Researchers have found that addition of paclitaxel to microtubules alters their structure. This compound modulates the material properties of microtubules by converting destabilized growing microtubule ends into regions resistant to depolymerisation, eventually leading to cell death.

New non-invasive cell imaging method reveals lipid droplet structure
BL09-MISTRAL

A research team has developed a new multimodal imaging method that combines different microscopy techniques. This method was used to gather complementary information about the composition and structure of lipid droplets in yeast cells. One of its advantages is that it does not employ any chemical markers or fixing agents, which can potentially damage cells.

On May 16th it was the International Day of Light #IDL2020 and we celebrated posting some light-related pictures :

ALBA is the only synchrotron light source in Spain. It is a complex of electron accelerators to produce synchrotron light, which allows visualization and analysis of matter and its properties at atomic and molecular levels. In operation since 2012, ALBA has eight beamlines and four more under construction. It generates about 6,000 hours of beamtime and hosts more than 1,800 academic and industrial researchers every year.
