Call for undergraduate students' internships

Last days to apply! Till the 31st of May 2021 undergraduate students can apply to do an internship at the ALBA Synchrotron during 2021-2022 course. There are 14 positions for different academic profiles: physics and accelerators' technologies, mechanics design, vacuum technologies, health & safety, computing and controls, industrial applications of synchrotron light and science communications.

International Day of Light 2021

On the 16th May we celebrated the International Day of Light, a global initiative that aims to highlight the science and technologies of light, the related advances that have been made possible, their impact on our daily life and the potential that allows facing current society challenges.

The ASTIP project, a research and innovation hub next to ALBA

Top-level research institutions from the Barcelona Metropolitan area join forces to develop a scientific and technological park. The project, already pre-selected by the Catalan Government for the Next Generation EU funds, will expand research capabilities in complex materials and biological systems. ASTIP is inspired by the ALBA renewal program (ALBA II) and includes three new centers: the Complex Materials and Technologies Center (COMTEC), the Advanced Multiscale Bio Imaging Center (AMBIC) and the innovation hub (SYNDUSTRY). Altogether, it will blend a unique combination of characterization and imaging tools, big data, material growth and device fabrication facilities.

Industrial Workshop: synchrotron applications on cements, pigments & ceramics

On 19th ALBA Industrial Liaison Office held a webinar on synchrotron light applications for cements, pigments and ceramics. Over 40 participants joined the virtual session, which included some conferences and practical examples of companies who have performed analysis at ALBA.

HIGHLIGHTS

Unravelling the history of 15th century Chinese porcelains with synchrotron light
BL22-CLAESS

Researchers from French and Spanish Institutions used the combination of two synchrotron light characterization techniques to study Chinese blue-and-white Ming porcelains, which are decorated under the glaze with Cobalt-based blue pigments, and produced during a one-step firing at high temperatures. The approach they used can also be applied on a broad range of modern and archaeological ceramics to elucidate their production technology.

Potential biomarkers for the most aggressive type of brain cancer cells
BL01-MIRAS

An experiment led by Tanja Ducic, scientist at the MIRAS beamline of ALBA, is analyzing live cells with synchrotron-based Fourier Transformed Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to identify crucial potential biomarkers in order to target them and to help develop new therapeutic strategies.

A step forward in the optimization of cathode materials for better lithium-ion batteries
BL04-MSPD

In a study published in Advanced Functional Materials, researchers show the synthesis optimization of NCM622 cathode material for Lithium-ion batteries, achieving both lower energy capacity cost and high cyclability. The results can be directly applied to production of better Li-ion batteries for modern electronics. Reaction was investigated using in situ X-Ray Diffraction technique at the MSPD beamline at ALBA.
Innovative methodology for synthesizing fullerenes
BL13-XALOC

A Catalan-German collaboration has developed an innovative three-shell structure with the aim of improving future organic solar cells. XALOC beamline of the ALBA Synchrotron offered structural insights of this new system.

ALBA is the only synchrotron light source in Spain. It is a complex of electron accelerators to produce synchrotron light, which allows visualization and analysis of matter and its properties at atomic and molecular levels. In operation since 2012, ALBA has 8 beamlines and 5 more under construction. It generates about 6,000 hours of beamtime and hosts more than 2,000 academic and industrial researchers every year.
