Call for proposals 2021-I is open
Call for proposals for the 2021-I cycle is now open till 7th September. This call covers experiments from January 2021 to June 2021, except for BL13-XALOC Beamline which will cover all the year. This is the first call addressed to 10 beamlines, since LOREA and NOTOS are included.

First photons on the first mirror of LOREA beamline

On July the 24th LOREA beamline saw its first photons. The elliptical undulator generated the first photons that have gone through the front end and reached the first optical element, a plane mirror called M1 whose main function is absorbing all the unwanted radiation, and have been finally reflected to a phosphorous screen.

"Misión ALBA" closes the school year with a live chat with almost 600 students

Despite the students having to be confined at home, the second edition of "Misión ALBA" has kept going, finishing the school year with a streaming where the kids were able to interact live with some members of ALBA's staff.

HIGHLIGHTS

Study of potential drugs against COVID-19 at the ALBA Synchrotron
BL11-NCD-SWEET

A research team uses synchrotron light to study the possible effect of an antitumoral drug of clinical use over the viral cycle of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. The drug might interrupt the viral transport inside the cell, blocking its replication.

A nanotechnology-based system that can transport methane at lower pressure and cost
BL04-MSPD

The system is based on a metal-organic framework material and offers an alternative for natural gas transport and natural gas-powered vehicles, like private cars, buses and ships. Some of the experiments were performed at the MSPD beamline of the ALBA Synchrotron.
Optimizing the production of organosilanes with single-atom catalysis
BL22-CLAESS

A research team has shown that the combination of Ru and Rh single-atom catalysts stabilized at the surface of CeO2 creates a synergetic effect enabling a highly selective olefin isomerization-hydrosilylation tandem reaction. The process is highly relevant from an industrial point of view.

Tricine as a potential enhancer for cisplatin-based skin cancer treatment
BL09-MISTRAL / BL11-NCD-SWEET

A study has demonstrated that the use of tricine as an adjuvant for cisplatin chemotherapy enhances drug effectiveness against cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma. This study assesses the effectiveness of several treatments by looking at the changes in the internal structures of the cells at MISTRAL.

ALBA is the only synchrotron light source in Spain. It is a complex of electron accelerators to produce synchrotron light, which allows visualization and analysis of matter and its properties at atomic and molecular levels. In operation since 2012, ALBA has eight beamlines and four more under construction. It generates about 6,000 hours of beamtime and hosts more than 1,800 academic and industrial researchers every year.
