Milestone reached! XAIRA's undulator installed
This is the longest undulator ever installed at the ALBA Synchrotron, with a magnetic length of 2.3 metres and housing 115 magnetic periods. XAIRA is the new microfocus beamline, dedicated to challenging Macromolecular Crystallography (MX) experiments. This project is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Deadline extended for funded beamtime for SMEs

Small and medium companies (SMEs) can ask for funded beamtime in different European light sources thanks to EU CALIPSOplus project till the 30th of June 2021.

ALBA collaborates with Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) in a study about Wi-Fi technology in industrial environments

A UOC team has carried out the first parameterization of a millimetre-band signal propagation model applied to an industrial environment like the ALBA Synchrotron facility. It is the first step towards high performance wireless communications in the manufacturing industry.

HIGHLIGHTS

Synchrotron light reveals why modernist stained glass deteriorate
BL04-MSPD

Scientist have studied the materials and methods used in the production of modernist stained glass from the city of Barcelona, with special regards to the degradation mechanisms. The data obtained was key for deciphering the structure and composition of the glazes used in the stained glass windows, as well as their state of conservation, with the aim of improving the preservation of this cultural heritage.

A team from the Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona Hospital studies Muscular Dystrophy in ALBA
BL09-MISTRAL

The technology available at MISTRAL beamline in the ALBA Synchrotron allowed a research team from the Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona Hospital to study the subcellular alterations in Muscular Dystrophy patients, thanks to the spacial resolution of 50nm.

New approach in laser fabricated electrodes for supercapacitive energy storage
BL041-MIRAS

Researchers have used, for the first time, a combination of cerium oxide nanoparticles and manganese metal organic precursor in the laser targets for the synthesis of a hybrid material. The used laser deposition technique allowed the fabrication of high-performance supercapacitor electrodes.

Scientists discover a new material suitable for heat-assisted magnetic recording
BL29-BOREAS

A new highly-anisotropic Rh-based Heusler compound has been reported as an ideal candidate for high-density magnetic recording media through fast heat-assisted writing technology. The BOREAS beamline helped to characterize this new material probing the origin of its giant magneto-crystalline anisotropy.

AGENDA

ALBA II Colloquium series
ALBA II Colloquium Series
The ALBA II Colloquium series is an open discussion forum in which our user community, ALBA staff, world experts in synchrotron research, and potential future users exchange experiences in their research, show the current frontier in synchrotron-based characterization, and discuss methods to understand the functionality of complex systems.

ALBA is the only synchrotron light source in Spain. It is a complex of electron accelerators to produce synchrotron light, which allows visualization and analysis of matter and its properties at atomic and molecular levels. In operation since 2012, ALBA has eight beamlines and four more under construction. It generates about 6,000 hours of beamtime and hosts more than 1,800 academic and industrial researchers every year.
